Students in the news…
On February 26th Tyler Manion won the 2005 Burrell Super Trophy Wrestling Tournament in the 10 & Under, 75 pound class. It also turned out to be the 5th time this season that Tyler was again unscored upon in a tournament.
Sean Lubin wrestled on February 26 at the Washington High School Wrestling Tournament. He paced 1st in the 12 and under 80 pound division and placed 3rd in the 12 and under 85 pound division. Sean also took 2nd place in the 13 & Under, combined 75/80 pound class at the 2005 Bethel Park Odd-Age Wrestling Tournament on March 6th. This tournament was an Ohio Tournament of Champions National Championships qualifier.
March 13th saw many South Fayette youth and middle school wrestlers competing in the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling (PJW) Junior Olympic Area 7 West Qualifier at North Hills Junior High School. Several South Fayette Middle School students placed very well in the tournament. The goal was to place in the top 4 to advance to the PJW Junior Olympic Area 7 Finals. Taking 3rd place in the 10 & Under, 60 pound class was Jaylin Lewis. Tyler Manion won the 10 & Under, 75 pound class. Korey Loeffler placed 4th in the 12 & Under, 75 pound class. Nick Carr won the 12 & Under, 100 pound class. All four of these wrestlers advanced.
The PJW Junior Olympic Area 7 Finals were held on March 19th at Avonworth High School. This is the final qualifier for the PJW State Championships in Hershey on April 1st & 2nd. To qualify for States, a wrestler has to place in the top 2 of their bracket. Any other placing does not qualify. And there is “true second” in this tournament meaning that the 3rd place finisher can challenge the 2nd place finisher for a match so long as the 2nd place finisher had not already defeated the 3rd place finisher that day in the tournament.
The middle school wrestlers, and actually the only wrestlers from South Fayette to qualify for the Pennsylvania State Wrestling Championships in Elementary, Junior High or High School for the 2004-2005 season were Nick Carr & Tyler Manion! This is Tyler’s second year to qualify for the State Wrestling Championships and Nick’s first. Tyler placed 2nd in the 10 & Under, 75 pound class while Nick placed 2nd in the 12 & Under, 100 pound class. CONGRATULATIONS & GOOD LUCK to both as they represent South Fayette School District in Hershey!
Other wrestlers that placed in the PJW Junior Olympic Area 7 Finals were Jaylin Lewis, who took 4th in 10 & Under, 60 pound class and Korey Loeffler who took 4th in the 12 & Under, 75 pound class.
